Philippines : Beverage firm's workers warn of nationwide strike
WORKERS of a major beverage company have warned of a workers' strike and national boycott after their employer announced that it is closing down its operation in Negros Occidental.
president of Samahan ng mga Driver at Helper ng Asia Brewery sa Bacolod-Super Federation, said in a press statement Friday the closure of the beverage giant Asia Brewery Inc.’s (ABI) local operation is “a form of union busting tantamount to unfair labor practice.”
The closure will result to the lay-off of its 32 truck drivers and personnel operating in the province, and the Department of Labor and Employment (Dole)-6 also held in abeyance its scheduled union certification election on Feb. 12, 2015.
Gavoro slammed the labor department’s order, saying he believes there’s “a conspiracy between ABI and Dole because Dole entertained the appeal of the company.”
“Under the rules of certification election, management is only a bystander party in intra-union affairs. They have no power to appeal the certification election. Their only role is to supply the list of workers in their company or branch,” he added.
He said their labor struggle started from July 2014 as he disclosed that the management allegedly refused to give them copies of their payslips.
“It was just a small demand but it opened a can of worms,” Gavoro said.
He also said that their overtime pay and night differential pay were allegedly unpaid.
“We also found out that our SSS and Pag-Ibig contributions were not paid completely,” Gavaro added.
