Canada : Contract talks between city and its skilled professionals break off
The City of Winnipeg and the union representing its skilled professionals are heading into arbitration after contracts talks broke off.
The Winnipeg Association of Public Service Officers, also known as WAPSO,
has been without a contract since Oct. 11, 2015.
The union represents 739 professionals such as city planners, lawyers, engineers and middle managers. Its workers are subject to layoffs, unlike members of most other unions that represent city employees.
The union confirmed talks broke off in July but declined interview requests. The city received the letter asking for arbitration last week.
"WAPSO requested interest arbitration as per the terms of the collective agreement. The city is hopeful that a negotiated settlement can be reached," said city spokesman David Driedger.
WAPSO is the only City of Winnipeg union whose collective agreement has expired.
